What are expectations of my child?
Please be aware that this is a fun but also a learning experience. We want the children to enjoy themselves when creating their films but we do ask them to be respectful of the learning experience of others and not to disrupt the class. For more information please view our behaviour policy.on.
How long do the courses last for?
Our courses typically last for 6 weeks and run within a school half term. Each class is 2 hours long.
What does a typical class look like?
We operate on a 2 week cycle focusing on a specific genre for that amount of time. We generally begin each session with a warm up/ice breaker activity. In the first week of the cycle we get to grips with the genre by looking at and analysing film clips. Then over the rminder of that lesson and into the next week we work towards the children producing their own finished mini movie. Working in small groups (of around 4) they will have the opportunity to act, write basic scripts, produce storyboards to compose their shots, film and finally edit their work. There is a lot of group chat where the children will share ideas and collaborate about the film that they are about to make. At the end of the 2 weeks, we will watch and analyse the finished films.
Who are Richard and James?
We are both fully DBS checked school teachers with many years of experience between us working across the primary range. We have made several short films for school involving both the children and adults and believe that all children involved have found it to be a very enjoyable and rewarding experience.
Which styles of film will my child get to experience?
We will be focusing on different genres across the history of film. The courses study genres such as classic comedy, classic horror, modern superhero movies, 50s B Movies, spy movies, detective and mystery.
If my child decides they do not like the course can I receive a refund?
Unfortunately we cannot offer refunds once you have signed up for the course. We have costs which we have to cover such as the hire of the hall. We will do our absolute best to try to give your child a film making experience that they will enjoy.
If my child misses a week can I receive a refund?
Unfortunately we cannot offer refunds if your child misses a week.
Does my child need to bring anything with them?
Your child does not need to bring anything as we will provide the equipment and costume when required. However if they have a particular prop or costume that they would like to include in their film, then they are more than welcome to do so.
Can they eat or drink?
Unfortunately not. We have equipment which could get damaged by food or drink.
What if my child has medical needs?
If your child has any specific medical needs or conditions, please state these clearly on the booking form.
What equipment will my child get to use?
The children will use iPads to create their films. They will also have the experience of working with a DSLR camera, professional lights and a green screen.
What happens to the finished films?
The children will get the opportunity to keep a DVD copy of their finished films. We reserve the right to use any footage shot by the children or of the children to promote Reel Movie Magic on our website or other forms of social media.
